Thirdson Construction choose Earth Friendly Concrete® by Wagners

Thirdson Construction are committed to a sustainable future that is why they selected Earth Friendly Concrete® by Wagners (EFC®) for a residential project, saving over 29 tonnes of embodied carbon emissions. This saving is the equivalent to running a residential house for four and half years.

For this renovation in the suburb of Toowong, Brisbane over 117 m3 of EFC® was used for footings, block fillings and structural supports. Turning this original, character filled, weatherboard home into a modern and green beauty.

Earth Friendly Concrete® by Wagners is an ultra-low carbon concrete and is much more sustainable than traditional concrete. It reduces embodied carbon by around 70% saving 250kg of CO₂ per cubic metre poured. It is made from a binder consisting of industrial waste products, ground granulated blast furnace slag and pulverised fly ash with no Portland Cement.

Which is an important difference as the built environment is considered emission heavy, with concrete and cement responsible for an estimated eight per cent of annual global emissions.

Remarkably, though the engineering properties of EFC® are the same, and in many ways, better than conventional concrete. Advantages include improved durability, lower shrinkage, higher tensile strength, and increased fire resistance compared with ordinary concrete.
