Wagners is pleased to announce that it has secured a material contract for the supply of over 67,000 precast concrete tunnel segments for the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport (Station Boxes and Tunnelling Works) Project (the Project), with tunnelling works planned to commence in early 2023. The new Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport service will connect St Marys with the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport and the Western Sydney Aerotropolis, providing a public transport service to the new airport. The Project, being delivered by the CPB Contractors Ghella (CPBG) joint venture, involves the construction of 9.8 kilometres of twin metro rail tunnels.
Wagners scope of works will require the manufacture of over 67,000 precast concrete tunnel segments for the twin tunnels, with all segments being manufactured locally at Wagners’ precast manufacturing facility in Wacol, Brisbane. Manufacture of the segments will commence in late 2022 with the final segments scheduled for completion in early 2024.
Wagners secured the contract after demonstrating to the CPBG joint venture that it has the required experience and resources to deliver such an integral component of the Project. Wagners has successfully completed similar works packages on other tunnel infrastructure projects in recent years, most recently completing the manufacture of precast concrete segments for Brisbane’s Cross River Rail project.
Subject to project timing, the Project’s contribution to the Company’s revenue is expected to be in the vicinity of $140 million over an estimated 20 month period, commencing late 2022.
Wagners’ Managing Director, Cameron Coleman said:
“The Sydney Metro-WSA-SBT is a significant project providing important transport infrastructure for the people of Sydney. Wagners are extremely proud to work with the CPBG joint venture on this critical scope of works for the Project which will also deliver significant job opportunities. The segments will be manufactured locally at our Wacol precast facility, before being transported to Sydney for installation into the Project. Wagners have been involved in the construction of the last three significant tunnel projects in Queensland, and is looking forward to being able to utilise this expertise in the manufacture and delivery of these segments for the Sydney Metro-WSA-SBT project. We will begin site preparation works over the coming months to ensure our facility and people are ready to commence production of the segments later this year.”
